Philadelphia, PA – Forest City Enterprises, a national real estate developer, recently sponsored the 12th annual Horizon House Charity Golf Tournament held at the Melrose Country Club on June 1, 2003, in Philadelphia, PA.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit programs sponsored by Horizon House which provides residential, vocational, educational, and day treatment services to people with low incomes, mental illness, drug & alcohol addictions and homelessness issues.

In partnership with the University of Pennsylvania, Forest City and its University Bioscience & Technology Group is currently developing a 123,000-square-foot translational research facility, located next to Horizon House on 31st Street, which will support NIH-funded advanced biomedical research initiated by scientists at Penn’s School of Medicine. This project is slated for completion in October 2004.

“We are grateful to Forest City for their generosity in supporting this wonderful event that will contribute to funding for our numerous programs,” said Dixie Palmer of Horizon House. “During these difficult times there cannot be a better cause than helping Philadelphia’s most vulnerable citizens and their families to become more productive members of their communities."

Paul Hickey, Senior Development Manager for Forest City said, “We are proud to contribute to this cause that helps make life better for those less fortunate.” “Forest City takes a great deal of pride in being a loyal corporate citizen and creating projects that help improve communities. We are happy to have Horizon House as our neighbor in Philadelphia and hope this contribution will help foster their programs for many years to come.”

Horizon House, Inc. was founded in 1952 as a support group for former mental hospital patients who had been released from psychiatric facilities into the community. Since then, the agency has expanded its scope of services to address the needs of adults with substance abuse problems (1972), mental retardation (1973), and those who are homeless (1984). Many of the people served by Horizon House have multiple disabilities.
