From the project's onset, Forest City's vision for University Park included office, research and development, hotel, retail, and residential uses. The University Park master plan, designed by Koetter Kim & Associates and winner of Progressive Architecture's Urban Design award, sets the framework for a dynamic urban environment. Forest City | Boston and Koetter Kim worked closely with MIT, the City of Cambridge, and local residents to develop an overall plan that was respectful of the neighborhood fabric, created a completely new utility and roadway infrastructure, and incorporated low- and moderate-income housing in its residential components. In order to be consistent with the physical character of Cambridge, the plan also called for buildings to be designed by a diverse group of architects, with materials that include traditional brick and masonry, carefully proportioned windows, and fine detailing.
